New Mexico middle school choral director Nicholas Prior stops by for a conversation about honesty, and above all else, doing what’s right for your students.
Nicholas Prior is a New Mexico native who graduated from the University of New Mexico where he was named the Outstanding Music Education Graduate Award in 2011. He just finished five years of teaching choir at Eisenhower Middle School in Albuquerque. Under his direction Eisenhower grew from a program of 60 students in two choirs to a program of over 200 students involved in eight year-long ensembles. Eisenhower Choir went on to win four consecutive State titles in Concert Choir and Show Choir, and Eisenhower was named the State Honor Choir, performing a concert at the 2016 NMMEA Conference. Mr. Prior has also conducted with the Albuquerque Boy Choir, the New Mexico Kodaly Institute, the UNM Children’s Chorus, as well as conducting regional honor choirs in Farmington, Rio Rancho, and Santa Fe, NM. His growing portfolio of arrangements and compositions for the developing voice have received numerous regional awards and recognition. Mr. Prior was recognized by the New Mexico Music Educators Association as the 2015 New and Emerging Music Educator of the Year. He will be starting at Columbia University, Teachers College this fall to earn his Masters in Music Education.
